Dusseldorf - Getting Around

Airport Transfers

Dusseldorf International Airport is the third largest in the country, handling over 17 million passengers annually. The airport is conveniently located just 9km away from the city centre. There are a number of options available to transport you from the airport to the city, the quickest being by train, which takes 12 minutes and costs €2.20. Alternatively jump in a taxi outside of the terminal building and the journey will take about 20 minutes and cost approximately €20-€25. Other nearby airports include Koln Bonn Airport and Airport Weeze, although these are located 60 - 90 minutes away from the city by car.

Boat

There are several ferry services which offer relaxing day cruises along the River Rhine, in the summer months, or you can enjoy a romantic dinner cruise at night. Long distance cruises are also available, both to other cities along the river in Germany, and to other European countries.

Car Rental

There are several top brand rental car companies located in the city, such as Avis and Sixt. It is possible to book your hire car in advance, either online or on the phone, and arrange for collection when you arrive at the airport terminal. Alternatively you can book directly at the airport, although there may be availability issues.

Metro

Dusseldorf has an extensive metro system, known as the U-Bahn, which has frequent services to a number of destinations on seven underground lines. Tickets must be purchased in advance, but they allow passengers to use other services such as the tram networks.

On Foot

Several of the cities attractions are located within walking distance of each other, and exploring the city by foot is an enjoyable experience, particularly in the summer months. Maps can be purchased at the airport, or at several shops in the city centre.

Taxi

There are over 1,300 taxis and 150 taxi ranks in operation in Dusseldorf. Is possible to hail one on the road, or book by phone, or online. All taxi’s are modern and well regulated, and fares can be paid for by cash or card.

Train

The cities main railway station is the Dusseldorf Hauptbahnhof, which is a major hub for the German state railway of Deutsche Bahn, with over 100 trains stopping in the city everyday. Tickets must be purchased in advance, and local services on the Rhinebahn require passengers to stamp the tickets before boarding the train - failure to do so could result in a fine. There are several ticket types which allow travel over a specific time period and to a certain number of stops. Ticket machines are mostly in German, although at the main station many staff speak English, and will be able to help you with the purchasing of your ticket.

Tram

Jumping on a tram is a nice way to view the city and travel to you required destination. There are a total of 13 tram lines, with numerous stops dotted around the city centre.
