Outdoor activities

With freezing temperatures across the country what better way to spend your time than getting involved in some outdoor activities? Skiing, “sliding” (racing down snow covered hills), winter surfing and snowshoeing are all popular winter activities and are easy to find and participate in. If getting active isn’t your idea of fun why not head to any outdoor space and build a snowman or two?

SuperNova Theatre Festival

Each April the SuperNova Theatre Festival sees theatre and dance come alive in the city. Extravagant productions and special events are put on around Halifax to celebrate the performing arts and workshops and competitions entertain the eclectic audiences.

Eagle Watch

Bird watchers delight in the annual Eagle Watch event held in the beautiful scenery of the Annapolis Valley north of Halifax. Thousands of Bald Headed Eagles make this area their home every year and January is the best time to spot them.

Scotia Festival of Music

The two week Scotia Festival of Music has been held throughout venues in Halifax since 1980. The chamber music festival is the highlight of the music scene in Halifax and offers over 50 public events. Attracting talent from all over the world, the Young Artist Programme allows local gifted musicians to develop their own talent by working with these internationally renowned artists. As well as public concerts and their open rehearsals there are workshops, master classes and lectures for people to get involved in.

The Royal Nova Scotia Military

The world’s biggest annual indoor show takes place every July in Halifax and attracts thousands of people each year. The Royal Nova Scotia Military Tattoo features the world’s finest military and civilian performers. The exciting two and a half hour show is suitable for the whole family.

Sandcastle and sand sculpture competition

Clam Harbour beach is located about 90 km from Halifax and is home, each August, to a huge sandcastle and sand sculpture competition. People of all ages enter the event and many more come to view the magnificent works of art that are created.

The Atlantic Film Festivals

The Atlantic Film Festivals is Canada’s fourth major film festival and showcases the best productions from international and in particular, Canadian and Atlantic Canadian directors. The Inspired Script and Inspired Music competitions give local film makers a chance to make their name in the industry.

Maritime Fall Fair

A little piece of the country can be experienced in October in Halifax with the Maritime Fall Fair. The five day exhibition features equine competitions, a rodeo and barrel racing as well as sheep, horse and dog shows. Fair ground rides and a variety of food stalls will keep all the family amused.
