Mayday
This traditionally religious ceremony now attracts thousands of revellers and is one of the most loved yearly traditions. The festivities usually start with a picnic in the afternoon of the 1st of May, in one of Helsinki's major parks. This is followed by music and partying in a festival atmosphere which continues on late into the night.
Helsinki Samba Carnival
The Helsinki Samba carnival is an annual two day festival, which features over 1000 dancers, elaborate costumes, magnificent floats and amazing music. The streets become lined with tasty food stalls, where you can sample some tasty treats.
Helsinki Flea Market
During the summer months there is a flea market on every weekday from 3.30pm-8pm. Here you can browse weird and wonderful items, and perhaps even pick up a bargain! Admission is free.
Helsinki Arts Festival
Finland's biggest art festival features theatrical performances, workshops, films, art and concerts, and attracts over 250,000 every year. An additional 'Night of the Arts' will take place on the 27th of August, bringing with it a whole host of talented musicians. Tickets can be brought in advance from the website, but they can sell out early so book early to secure your spot.
Helsinki International Film Festival
This prestigious festival held in late December attract film-makers and lovers from around the globe. A wide selection of films can be viewed through the weekend, and tickets can be purchased online.
Helsinki Book Fair
A lovely day out for all literary lovers, this four day event sees some of the worlds top authors gather for signings, personal readings and workshops. Tickets can be purchased online in advance, from the Helsinki Book Fair website.
