Stockholm Cathedral
Located next to the Royal Palace in the district of Gamla Stan the cathedral, known as Storkyrkan, was built in the 13th century and is Stockholm’s oldest church. A beautiful example of Gothic architecture it contains two great Swedish treasures, a wooden statue of Saint George and the Dragon, and a copy of an image of Stockholm, thought to be the oldest in existence. Free to the public all year round, there are daily guided tours in English.
top ↑Gamla Stan
The old district of Stockholm, Gamla Stan was founded in 1252. It transports its visitors back to medieval Sweden and is one of the best preserved sites of its kind. Here you will find a vast array of historical sights, museums and churches as well as craft shops, restaurants and cafés. Wandering around the narrow winding streets is the best way to experience the district and you can immerse yourself in history with all there is to see.
top ↑Royal Palace
Located in the district of Gamla Stan, the Royal Palace is one of the largest in the world, comprising of over 600 rooms. It is the official residence of HM the king of Sweden and is open to the public most of the year. Within the palace are five museums with separate entrance fees, although ha combined ticket can be bought, these include the Armoury, the Tre Kronor Museum and the Treasury. Ancient traditions are upheld and the changing of the guard is daily event not to be missed.
top ↑Skansen Open Air Museum
One of Djurgården’s famous attractions Skansen Open Air Museum is the oldest of its kind in the world. It attracts both Stockholm residents and tourists and is extremely popular with families and children. A reconstruction of traditional Sweden, visitors can learn about daily life and the crafts practiced by the people. Also at the museum is the Stockholm Zoo, where native Scandinavian animals are cared for as well as animals from around the world. There is an entrance fee for the Museum and this varies throughout the year depending on the season.

Popular with art lovers Millesgården is the home of Sweden’s most famous sculptor, Carl Milles. The old studio contains works by and information about the artist himself whilst his sister’s and wife’s works are displayed next door. Visitors may also wander around the house and throughout the beautiful grounds featuring some of the most famous sculptures. Millesgården is located on the island of Lidingö and is easily reached from the city.

Opened in 1923 Stockholm’s City Hall is a grand example of Swedish architecture. A significant Stockholm landmark, the City Hall is open for guided tours year round. It took 8 million bricks to construct the famous building and the Swedish national coat of arms is displayed on its 106 meter high tower. The international Nobel Prizes are awarded here and the Nobel ball is held in the Golden Hall, named after its 18 million gold mosaic tiles.
