Ice-skating

Throughout the winter ice-skating at Kungsträdgården park is a popular activity. It was opened in 1962 and inspired by New York’s outdoor skating rink.

The end of winter

The end of winter is celebrated each year in Sweden during Walpurgis Night. Held every April 30th traditional bonfires are lit across the country. In Stockholm the Skansen Open Air Museum is the place to be with the largest celebration in the city. The afternoon kicks off with the traditional “three cheers for spring” and continues with a number of concerts.

Hellasgården recreation area

For outdoor enthusiasts Hellasgården recreation area offers all kinds of activities. Popular with locals it is possible to don a pair of skis and take in the breathtaking winter wonderland. The brave may want to take a dip in the swimming hole cut out of ice. Only 20 minutes outside of Stockholm city it is easy to reach.

Gärdesloppet day

Every May Stockholm is taken over by classic cars for Gärdesloppet day. With its roots dating back to 1922 when a speed competition was organised, the modern day event sees classic cars from all over Sweden parade through the city streets before heading to a racetrack for a competition to see who can keep up the most constant speed.

Food festival

A Taste of Stockholm is the city’s annual food festival. Many of the city’s restaurants take part in the festival showcasing their culinary talents. As well as an enormous mouth-watering selection of cuisines to choose from there is live entertainment in the form of music concerts and cook offs at the Chef’s Theatre.

Gay Pride event

Like many other cities around the world Stockholm hosts its own Gay Pride event every July. Held in support of gay, lesbian and transgender people the festival promotes equal rights for all.

International Sonisphere Festival

The Swedish leg of the international Sonisphere Festival is held every year in Stockholm. A touring rock festival, the artistic highlights of Sonisphere include Iron Maiden, Alice Cooper and Rammstein. The festival is held over three days and tickets can be bought for the weekend or individual days.

Beer and Whiskey festival

Over several days in September in the old car factory of Nacka Strand the Swedish Beer and Whiskey festival celebrates the growing Swedish beer industry. With tastings, tutorials and prize ceremonies the festival draws crowds from all over Europe in the search of new and exciting Swedish beer.

Bull Run

A test of fitness in the extreme, the annual Bull Run is a 10km race located somewhere in the Stockholm countryside. The all male competition requires great strength and endurance as the course is purposely designed to navigate through some of the swampiest conditions.

International Horse Show

Stockholm’s International Horse Show draws the biggest crowds of any horse show in the world. It showcases the finest examples of equine talent, with competitions from dressage and jumping to awards for the highest standards of breeding.

Winter Solstice Festival

Winter magic comes alive on the island of Djurgården every year during the Winter Solstice Festival. Music concerts and performances entertain the audience whilst ice sculptors create amazing scenes from frozen water.
